Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and aerobic capacities (Vo2max) as well as to determine their association with BMI and %BF in a group of applicants to enter the dance degree program at a public university in Mexico: Method: Quantitative-observational-transectional study. Sample: By convenience. Instruments: Anthropometric evaluation using the ISAK method, Course Navette, and proposals from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, and the American College of Sports Medicine. Statistical analyses: Descriptive, Shapiro-Wilk, Student´s T, Mann-Whitney U, Spearman´s correlation, and Kruskal-Wallis using SPSS-29. Results: n=54 (38 women and 16 men), age ẋ=20.13, σ=3.55 years. 90.3% reflected low aerobic capacity, physical capacities were also found to be low, particularly in men. About BMI, 5.3% of women and 6.3% of men showed obesity and overweight 26% and 25%, respectively. %BF was high (81.6% in women and 56.3% in men). Vo2max and BMI, in both groups, showed an inverse but no significant association. Vo2max revealed an inverse and significant association with %BF (= -.401, p=.013) in women but not in men (= -.255, p=.341). Likewise, it was found that a higher BMI in women is associated with a Vo2max levels decrease (K-W= 6.11, p=0.047), this situation was not seen in men (U=25.5, p=0.827), probably because they were a small and homogeneous group. However, in men as BMI (= -.559, p=.025) and %BF (= -.552, p=.038) increase, core strength decreases. Conclusion: Aerobic capacity decreases while %BF and BMI increase in the women group; these results were not reflected in the men group due to their size limitations. However, as BMI and %BF increase in men, core strength decreases. Studies with larger and more heterogeneous groups in body composition are suggested.
